Network management software is an expensive proposition. Commercial packages can cost 100's of thousands of dollars in software licensing and require expensive multi-tier hardware installations. Installation is only the first step. Implementation requires many man-years of effort in customization to be effective in solving your specific management problems, and may still not do everything you want.
An Alternative
A wide spectrum of network management platforms and toolkits are freely available under free software and open source licenses. These tools can augment your existing network management infrastructure or they can stand on their own. If you have network management requirements that are not being met by commercial platforms or that have appeared too complex to solve then a custom solution may help.
